Missed the infosession?

On 5 October 2022, we held a virtual info session to answer your questions about the Call For Change. If you weren’t able make it or would like a refresher, see the recording below.

Eligibility

  • We have no eligibility requirements. We are looking for innovative and impactful ideas, no matter where they come from. We will be screening applications for legitimacy, relevance and passion. We also want to give great ideas the best possible chance at success by assembling the best teams. If you already have a consortium or partners in mind, great! If you don't but would like to find others to strengthen your application, we may be able to make an introduction!

  • No, applicants are not required to submit alongside an organisation. We are looking for innovative ideas for impactful projects wherever they come from. We have designed the Call For Change to give promising ideas the greatest chance of success by assembling the best team. When in doubt, apply. We may be able to make an introduction that could strengthen your application!

  • Yes, we accept projects at all stages, including those currently out in the world.

Submitting an Idea

  • Yes! We welcome multiple submissions from any one organisation. Please submit only one idea per form. If your application is successful, you will be invited to the Idea Lab Workshop where you may decide to concentrate on one idea or join forces with other successful applicants to collaborate on an idea together. The workshop is intended to bring innovative minds together so that the ideas with the most interest and support can rise to the top.

  • If you have an idea that satisfies one of our four focus areas, but does not involve any of our priority counties, we still encourage you to fill out the Applicant Interest Form.

We’d love to hear more about your idea and see how we can support your work by introducing you to other applicants and donors.

  • If you have a project that focuses on one of our priority counties, but may not fit perfectly into one of our focus areas, we still encourage you to fill out the Applicant Interest Form.

We’d love to hear more about your idea and see how we can support your work by introducing you to other applicants and donors.

  • Yes! We encourage you to submit local, community-level ideas. Selected local ideas will be asked to explore future scale-up.

  • Given the central role of the Ministry of Health in the Call for Change, we are prioritising ideas that equip health workers with skills to collaborate effectively with the Ministry of Health. Communities and community groups are critical to a well-functioning and effective county health system. We welcome ideas that embrace community knowledge, networks and systems. Building the capacity of communities to play that role, in close collaboration with county health officials, is a necessary and welcome approach. If you have a health worker capacity-building idea that involves communities, we encourage you to submit it.

  • Social and behavioural data at county level is the main area of focus. This could include collection, validation, interpretation, training, and promoting data for action, among others. We invite proposals that consider all aspects of this journey. However, presenting pure process without considering the tools, or tools without considering the capacity and process, may be considered a limitation.

  • Yes! We are looking for health system strengthening ideas focused on one of the following four aspects of county health systems:

    ● Building skills and capacity for Health Promotion at the county level

    ● Health service design with a focus on health worker motivation

    ● Data collection and analysis

    ● Health system coordination that builds from the county up

  • Call For Change is run at the discretion and advice of the Kenyan Ministry of Health. Advisors from the Ministry of Health Promotion team will be able to advise on the feasibility and implementation of ideas.

  • The Applicant Interest Form is designed to provide us with brief details about the applicant and a clear and concise overview of their proposed idea. At this stage of the application process, we are only looking for short summaries, hopefully welcoming a range of ideas, from developing to fully formed. The final application is your opportunity to discuss your idea in depth. We will share guidance about this in the Idea Lab Workshop.

  • Final proposals will be reviewed by the advisory committee, which is composed of members of the Kenyan Ministry of Health's Health Promotion Advisory Committee, county-level representatives from our eight priority counties, and global health specialists and behavioural designers at Common Thread. This advisory committee is in the process of developing the final selection criteria. We will announce the final selection criteria at the Idea Lab Workshop.

Funding and Support

  • Individual ideas may receive funding between $20K and $350K, depending on the needs and the number of ideas selected. The funds available for all winning ideas total over $350,000. We aim to increase this total before the ideas are selected through support from other partners and donors. Guided by the quality and range of ideas proposed, the advisory committee may divide this amount among several ideas, or choose only one idea to receive this funding.

  • The grants should focus on the social and behaviour change aspects of our four focus areas. Selected ideas will not be expected to use funds for infrastructure development, procurement or supplies.

  • Coaches from Common Thread and other supporting organisations will provide limited but timely support – to assist applicants with proposal submissions, and support winning teams through implementation. This support is built into the grant and is not costed separately. In other words, there is no need to include any coaching support, whether from Common Thread or beyond, into your proposal budgets. One of the guiding principles for the Call for Change is that all participants will benefit from the knowledge and guidance provided by partners during proposal development, whether or not their proposal is ultimately selected for funding. Winning proposals will benefit from longer-term support following the award.
